I kept hearing people say the Incarnation of Dread is "just a mechanics check," but that's not how it feels when you're on your fifth portal and the boss is still at 80%. I swapped off my usual Necro habits and built an Absolution Guardian instead, mostly because I wanted time to think, not just react. A bit of extra block, some steady endurance charges, and a chunky Radiance minion buys you breathing room. If you're gearing on a budget, it also helps to know what a couple divs in [link=https://www.u4gm.com/path-of-exile/currency]*[/link]POE 1 Currency can actually do for consistency, not just tooltip damage.
Why Guardian feels calmer than Necro
The damage isn't mind-blowing, sure. But the Guardian version doesn't fold the second a lightning tendril clips you. The playstyle is simple: I tag packs and adds with a level 21 Vaal Absolution, then let Sentinels do the dirty work while I move. That's the real win here—less panic rolling, more controlled dodging. You'll notice it fast when the arena gets messy and you're not instantly punished for one bad step.
Fourteen runs, no excuses
I wanted something more solid than "it felt better," so I tracked 14 Echo of Reverence runs. In runs 1 through 7, I used plain yellow-map gear, maybe 2–3 div total, and got 5 kills. In runs 8 through 14, I upgraded into Doryani's Prototype and added a couple decent cluster jewels, and I went 7 for 7. The difference wasn't luck. It was the moment my minions started deleting the add waves quickly enough that I stopped getting boxed in during the immunity phases.
Rose phases and staying alive
Dread's fight is nasty because it forces you to do two jobs at once. You've got three rose phases where you sprint around collecting the right colors to drop his immunity, and right after that he starts dumping lightning slams and lingering DoT puddles all over the place. Standing still is basically asking to die. What helped me most was pre-casting Vaal Absolution before the phase flips. The Sentinels immediately hunt adds while I focus on roses and spacing. Also: movement speed boots. Not glamorous, but they're the difference between clean pickups and getting clipped while turning a corner.
When the grind feels pointless
You're still going to faceplant while learning spawns and timing, and that's normal. But if you're staring at a 15-div upgrade and you're sick of running low-value maps just to "earn the right" to practice the boss, I get why people shortcut it. Some folks in my guild grab a bit of currency through U4GM so they can jump straight back into attempts with proper gear and actually spend their time learning the fight instead of endlessly restocking.
